Jets sign K Sam Ficken, waive goodbye to Kaare Vedvik

Once again, the Jets will add a kicker.

New York signed free agent Sam Ficken after he won the team’s kicking tryout on Tuesday. Incumbent kicker Kaare Vedvik was waived to make room on the roster.

Ficken is the fourth kicker the Jets have brought in since training camp began. He was most recently with Green Bay Packers, going 5-for-5 on extra points during the preseason while making his lone field goal attempt from 41 yards out.

Ficken went undrafted out of Penn State in 2015 before signing with the Jaguars in 2016. He was with them during training camp before being released prior to the start of the season. In 2017, the Chiefs signed him for training camp, but he was released before the regular season. Ficken then moved onto the Rams at the end of the 2017 season and stayed with them through training camp in 2018. However, the Rams re-signed him in September and he kicked in a few regular-season games before being released in October.

The Jets had no choice but to move on from Vedvik after his poor debut cost the team a win. He missed an extra point and a 45-yard field goal attempt against the Bills on Sunday, a one-point loss for Gang Green.
