Early returns on New York’s 2019 rookie class have been disappointing, but one member of the group has been able to buck the trend and shine the past couple of weeks.
Gang Green’s rookies have been mostly non-factors through the first three weeks due to either injury or lack of opportunity. It’s tough to truly judge the group under those circumstances, but it has to be done nonetheless.
With that being said, let’s take a look at where New York’s neophytes stand heading into the bye week.
No. 5: OT Chuma Edoga

Last Week: No. 5
Edoga did not take the field against the Patriots in Week 3. Considering the way New York’s offensive line is performing right now, though, that could change in the coming weeks.
No. 4: DT Quinnen Williams

Last Week: No. 4
Williams was inactive for the second consecutive week due to an ankle injury. The hope is that he will return to the field against the Cowboys in Week 5.
No. 3: TE Trevon Wesco

Last Week: No. 3
Wesco was active, but did not appear in the box score for the third straight game.
Wesco’s true impact comes as a blocker, which keeps him out of the box score for the most part. However, the Jets barely used tight ends against the Patriots, limiting his ability to make an impact.
No. 2: DT Kyle Phillips

Last Week: No. 2
Phillips was active for the second consecutive week, which is more than almost all of New York’s rookies can say.
Not only did the undrafted free agent out of Tennessee take the field, but he recorded his first career tackle as well. Kudos to Phillips for not only making the active roster, but contributing when given the opportunity.
No. 1: LB Blake Cashman

Blake Cashman’s time in the starting lineup might be up once the Jets return from their bye in Week 5, but that doesn’t take away from what he’s been able to accomplish with C.J. Mosley sidelined.
Cashman had himself another good game against the Patriots, recording six tackles and one for a loss. New York’s defense got shredded by Tom Brady and company, but Cashman was solid in run support and made plays when he had to.
If it weren’t for Neville Hewitt also getting off to a strong start this season, odds are Cashman would be the one starting next to Mosley when he returns to the field. Either way, the Minnesota product will surely factor into defensive coordinator Gregg Williams’ plans heavily moving forward.
