Jets release Elijah McGuire after just 2 seasons

Another Mike Maccagnan draft pick bit the dust.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Jets have released running back Elijah McGuire. This move likely means both Bilal Powell and Trenton Cannon will make the roster, serving in the Jets backfield behind Le’Veon Bell and Ty Montgomery.

McGuire was a 2017 draft pick by Maccagnan out of Louisiana-Lafayette. He had a strong rookie season with the Jets, running for 315 yards on 88 carries to go along with one touchdown. As a receiver, McGuire had 177 receiving yards and a touchdown. The following season, McGuire’s playing time decreased after he fractured his foot in minicamp. McGuire managed to play in eight games last season and had 276 rushing yards, 193 receiving yards and four total touchdowns.

With McGuire gone, there are only two players left from Maccagnan’s 2017 draft class: Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye. It’s pretty safe to say that year was one of Maccagnan’s worst draft classes in his tenure with New York. Now, the new regime led by Joe Douglas is cleaning house.

The Jets backfield was simply too crowded with the additions of Bell and Montgomery. McGuire was no longer a fit for Gang Green, but he should be able to find himself a new job sooner or later.
