Jets RB Bilal Powell placed on injured reserve with neck injury, will need surgery

The Jets added another name Wednesday to their growing list of injured players by placing Bilal Powell on injured reserve.

The Jets, already ravaged by injuries at wide receiver and defensive back, are down to Isaiah Crowell, who's playing with an ailing ankle and rookie Trenton Cannon. Eli McGuire is back practicing with the team and eligible to return in Week 9 against the Dolphins.

Powell, who will turn 30 this week, suffered a neck injury after getting tackled by Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr in the first half of Gang Green's loss on Sunday. Powell, who has had neck issues in the past, likely has played his final game with the Jets.

Jets coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday afternoon that Powell will undergo surgery. Bowles said it was "possible" the injury could be career ending for Powell.

He's scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Powell, who 343 rushing yards (4.3 yards per carry) this year, had 5,013 total yards and 20 touchdowns in seven-plus seasons with the Jets.

He's the latest player to be shelved for Todd Bowles' team. Gang Green is already missing four of their top six defensive backs (cornerbacks Trumaine Johnson and Buster Skrine and safeties Marcus Maye and Doug Middleton). Top wide receiver Quincy Enunwa is out for at least a few weeks with a high ankle sprain. Wideout Terrelle Pryor was cut last weekend after he suffered a groin tear that prompted the team to sign street free agent Rishard Matthews this week.

The Jets signed safety Ibraheim Campbell to take Powell's roster spot.
