Jets QB Sam Darnold out vs. Eagles

The Jets thought Sam Darnold had a chance to start on Sunday, but he was not cleared for contact and has been ruled out against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Darnold’s spleen is still enlarged. He took tests Thursday night and wasn’t cleared by doctors. Darnold will not be cleared until he is 100 percent healthy and the swelling in his spleen goes down.

In Darnold’s place, Luke Falk will make his second career start. Darnold received the lion’s share of first-team reps throughout practice this week, so Falk could be a little behind.

Forced to pivot to Falk, the Jets have two quarterbacks who did not receive enough reps to start on Sunday. Falk practiced but did not receive the majority of reps. If he gets hurt, the Jets will have to turn to David Fales, who was just re-signed.

Even if Darnold had been medically cleared, it may have been too soon to play him from a football and fairness standpoint. Another week off will be better for him in the long term.

In other injury news, LB Jordan Jenkins (calf) has been ruled out. LB C.J. Mosley (groin) and LG Kelechi Osemele (shoulder) have not been ruled out yet, but it’s unlikely that either plays on Sunday.
