Jets QB Sam Darnold medically cleared to play vs. Cowboys

He’s back.

The Jets announced Tuesday that starting quarterback Sam Darnold has been medically cleared by doctors to play against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Darnold has missed the last three games due to mononucleosis.

Darnold was diagnosed with mono following the Jets’ Week 1 game against the Buffalo Bills. He thought he would be able to return last week against the Eagles, but team doctors didn’t clear him for contact. Darnold said on The Michael Kay Show Monday that he was confident that he’d pass his test this time. Lo and behold, he did.

The Jets offense has looked historically bad since Darnold has been out. They’ve scored one offensive touchdown in the last three games with Trevor Siemian and Luke Falk at quarterback. The performance of the offensive line hasn’t helped either — and should be a concern for the Jets in regard to Darnold even though the quarterback has been cleared.

With the Jets sitting at 0-4, though, this was the news they’ve been waiting for. Jets players have expressed confidence that they can turn their season around as long as they have their quarterback. Now that upward climb begins as their franchise gunslinger will be back under center on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
