FLORHAM PARK, N.J. _ The Jets placed Geno Smith (torn right ACL) on injured reserve on Wednesday, ending his season.
The decision to put Smith, 26, on IR came a day after he was scheduled to get a second opinion from noted knee specialist Dr. James Andrews.
Smith suffered the injury while trying to escape a sack in the second quarter of the Jets' 24-16 win over the Baltimore Ravens at MetLife Stadium last Sunday.
It was first start in nearly two years for Smith, who was tabbed as the starter after replacing Ryan Fitzpatrick. Though he said he felt fine during his postgame interview, an MRI on Monday revealed the torn ligament.
He completed 8 of 14 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown this season, which included his one start and one mop-up appearance in Kansas City in Week 6.
In a corresponding move, the team signed linebacker Taiwan Jones, who spent a portion of last season on the Jets' active roster before being one of their final roster cuts in September.
Jones had 14 tackles, four passes defensed and an interception during the preseason.
