Jets players, coaches sent home after positive coronavirus test; Offensive players re-tested after possible close contact

NEW YORK _ Jets players and coaches were sent home from the team facility Friday after a player tested positive for the coronavirus, a source confirmed. The player who had a presumed positive test is awaiting results later in the day from his second test.

In addition, the Daily News has learned that some offensive players are being re-tested Friday morning because they were presumed to be in close contact with the player who tested positive. The Jets will conduct virtual meetings Friday as they continue to prepare for Sunday's game against the Cardinals at MetLife Stadium.

The Cardinals were scheduled to leave for their cross-country flight Friday, but remain in a holding pattern.

The Jets are the latest team to be affected. The Titans outbreak has highlighted a troublesome couple weeks for the NFL, which had to postpone and re-arrange several games on the calendar. The Patriots game last week was moved from Sunday to Monday in Kansas City after Cam Newton tested positive.

The Titans mess has had a ripple effect that forced the league to postpone their game in Week 4 to later in the season. The litany of positive test results prompted the NFL to move this weekend's game with the Bills to Tuesday night, which bumped Buffalo's Week 6 matchup against the Chiefs from next Thursday night to next Saturday.

The 0-4 Jets have had their fair share of issues on the field. Calls for Adam Gase's ouster are growing louder by the day. Sam Darnold is out with a sprained shoulder. Questions about why decision makers played an injured Mekhi Becton on a short week reached a fever pitch after the rookie left tackle aggravated his shoulder issue.
