Jets place safeties Marcus Maye, Brandon Bryant on PUP list

With training camp on the horizon, the Jets are forced to trim their roster down to those who are able to participate.

With that in mind, the team has placed safeties Marcus Maye and Brandon Bryant on the active/physically unable to perform list. Meanwhile, rookie cornerback Bless Austin was put on the active/non-football-injury list.

The Jets are being extremely cautious with Maye, who dealt with his fair share of injuries in 2018. Maye is recovering from shoulder and thumb issues. He practiced in 7-on-7 periods in OTAs and minicamp, but was held out of team drills for precautionary measures.

In 2018, Bryant was on the Jets practice squad. New York signed Bryant as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State after he wasn’t selected in the supplemental draft. Austin, the Jets’ 2019 sixth-round choice, is rehabbing from a season-ending ACL tear, which he suffered in Rutgers’ season-opener.

Each of these moves is made out of precaution. With the Jets already thin at depth at both cornerback and safety, they cannot afford to risk any additional injuries.

These moves help free up a roster spot for TE Ryan Griffin, who was signed on Monday, and any additional help the Jets choose to add.
