Bryce Petty's audition to be the Jets' starting quarterback is over.
The Jets placed Petty on injured reserve Monday, ending his season. According to the team, the 25-year-old quarterback suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder while making a tackle in the first half of Saturday's 41-3 loss to the Patriots.
Petty took over for struggling quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in Week 14, and coach Todd Bowles was going to give him the final four starts of the season to prove himself. But Petty's audition was shortened by injury. He attempted only three passes in New England before getting hurt. And in a Week 15 loss to the Dolphins, Petty left the game and did not return after taking a huge hit from Miami's Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake.
The 2015 fourth-round pick out of Baylor had never played in an NFL game before this season. But he hardly distinguished himself. He finished the year 75-for-133 for 809 yards, three touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Petty is the second Jets quarterback to go on injured reserve this season, joining Geno Smith who suffered a torn ACL just 16 plays after he was named the starter over a struggling Fitzpatrick.
The only two quarterbacks remaining on the roster are Fitzpatrick and rookie Christian Hackenberg. Fitzpatrick will likely start Sunday against the Bills, but Hackenberg _ a second-round pick in May's draft _ could be activated for the first time.
