Jets offer the Browns passing game a chance to get hot

One area where the Cleveland Browns found some success against the Tennessee Titans was throwing the ball to wideouts. That is something Baker Mayfield and the Browns offense should be able to exploit in Week 2 against the New York Jets.

The Jets pass defense struggled badly against wide receivers in 2018. And while old friend Gregg Williams has installed his aggressive defense as New York’s new defensive coordinator, there are still holes in the secondary for Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry and the Browns receivers to exploit.

Per Inside Edge, the Jets allowed over 201 receiving yards per game to opposing wide receivers in 2018, the second-worst in the league. New York allowed the most receptions per game to wideouts as well, nearly 16 on average. The Bills — not exactly known for their wide receiving talent — beat the Jets in Week 1 by completing 15 passes to wideouts.

That’s the same number the Browns posted against the Titans, led by Beckham Jr. with seven. The Browns had three or more wideouts in the lineup on over 90 percent of offensive snaps in Week 1 and that seems to be the preferred setup for Freddie Kitchens and Todd Monken.

It’s a great opportunity to get healthy against the struggling Jets and their defense. Giving Mayfield time to survey the defense is key, but the chances to take shots with Beckham, Rashard Higgins and Landry should be prevalent on Monday night.
