EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Jets finally showed signs of progress on Sunday afternoon. They actually looked like a football team and had a chance to win all the way until the end.
But they still found a way to lose. And they did it in the most frustrating and discouraging way possible.
The Jets blew a double-digit first-half lead, falling to the Bills 18-10 at MetLife Stadium. The Jets are 0-7 and remain the only winless team in football.
Sam Darnold was impressive early as he returned after missing two games with a shoulder injury, completing 10 of his first 11 passes. And the Jets offense But he couldn't get anything going after halftime, as the Jets' offense was humming in the first half as Adam Gase handed play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains.
But the Jets picked up only four yards of total offense in the second half and one first down. This is hard to believe, but the offense was actually worse than those numbers, because Frank Gore gained 13 yards on the Jets' first offensive play of the second half, and the Jets didn't get another first down in the game.
Darnold finished 12-of-23 for 120 yards, and two interceptions. It's the first time in his career he's gone consecutive games without a touchdown pas. But he got no help from his offensive line, taking six sacks.
It's hard to know if it was on Darnold, who threw a brutal interception late in the first half or the play-calling, or the offensive line or the lack of weapons. But in the end, the third-year quarterback didn't come close to making the kind of big play the Jets needed to win.
And the Jets, even though they looked better, remain the worst team in football.
