FLORHAM PARK, N.J. _ Nick Mangold's season officially is over.
Following his Thursday visit with foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, N.C., the Jets decided to place the veteran center on injured reserve.
In a corresponding move, safety Doug Middleton will be promoted from the practice squad to the active roster.
Todd Bowles confirmed Mangold's meeting with Anderson, adding the center's right ankle "hurts pretty good." But news of Mangold being shut down for the season didn't come until after the coach's Thursday news conference ended.
Mangold missed only four games in his first 10 seasons, but his 11th year in the NFL has been plagued by a balky ankle. He missed four games this season because of the injury before playing in the Jets' 41-10 loss to the Colts on Monday night. But he was forced to leave the game early after aggravating the ankle and was back in a walking boot on Wednesday.
"Obviously for him to come back after having not played in a while, then come back and get hurt, I'm pretty sure it hurt the guy," Bowles said on a conference call Tuesday. "He's trying to play, trying to do everything he can, just a bad, unfortunate situation."
