Jets never asked Peyton Manning about GM job

Rumors were swirling last week about Peyton Manning being a candidate for the Jets’ general manager job, but those proved to be false.

Manning has a very close relationship with Jets head coach Adam Gase, as the two spent three seasons together in Denver. Despite their tight relationship, Gang Green never actually considered Manning for the gig vacated by Mike Maccagnan’s firing.

“It’s kind of hard not to hear about [the rumors],” Manning told the New York Post on Wednesday. “I never heard anything from the Jets. Nobody ever contacted me.”

But even if Manning had been contacted by the Jets, he doesn’t have any experience in the front office.

“I’m not sure I was qualified anyway,” Manning added.

The soon-to-be Hall of Fame quarterback has spent a lot of his time in the tri-state area as of late. With Manning in retirement, he has been able to help out Gase with the Jets, while also keeping an eye on his brother, Eli.

“I know he’s working real hard there in OTAs,” Manning said. “I talked to him the other day. He’s excited. I’ve been to see three Giants games these past three years, so I look forward to seeing Eli play in person. I’m proud of the way he’s handled himself and kept himself in great shape.”

It seems like Manning wants to be around the game still despite his playing days being behind him. However, his time as a general manager is just not meant to be at the moment, but it wouldn’t be surprising if something opened up for him in the future.
