Jets move Green & White scrimmage back, relocate to MetLife Stadium

The Jets will play their annual scrimmage on the biggest stage this summer.

The team announced they’re moving the Green and White scrimmage from Rutgers University to MetLife Stadium. The game will also take place on Sunday, August 18, a little over than two weeks later than it was originally scheduled on August 2. The Jets also changed one of their public practice dates from August 4 to August 3.

The change pushes the scrimmage into the middle of the preseason. When the Jets take the field on August 18 in front of fans and family, they’ll have already played their first two preseason games – at MetLife against the Giants and away against the Falcons. Moving the game back and at MetLife will give Gase essentially a fourth game at the team’s home stadium.

Last season, the Green and White scrimmage offered up the highly-anticipated quarterback competition between Darnold, Josh McCown, and Teddy Bridgewater. All three played well, but Darnold eventually got the nod to start Week 1.

This year, all eyes will once again be on Darnold as he enters a pivotal sophomore season under the direction of Gase. However, there will be plenty of intrigue surrounding the team that doesn’t include the quarterback. Le’Veon Bell will be incredibly interesting to watch considering he’ll be in the midst of his first preseason in over a year.

The scrimmage itself doesn’t always translate to the regular season, though. Running back Trenton Cannon played well in last year’s scrimmage but hasn’t proven to be anything more than a role player. With that being said, the scrimmage is still a great opportunity for players buried on the depth chart to make a name for themselves in front of a huge home crowd.
