Jets looking for high draft pick in potential Marcus Maye trade

The Jets are open to trading Marcus Maye, but Joe Douglas wants a high draft pick in return.

New York is seeking at least a third-round selection, according to SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano and ESPN’S Rich Cimini. However, there is doubt the Jets will land such a return for the 28-year-old safety.

One hangup, per both reports, is that suitors want New York to eat some of Maye’s salary, something the team could be reluctant to do. Maye is still owed $6.5 million from his $10.6 million franchise tag.

Maye is also facing potential discipline from his DUI arrest in February, but that is likely an issue for 2022 and shouldn’t impact contenders looking to upgrade their secondary this season. Maye is set to be a free agent — or franchise-tagged for a second time — this offseason after he and the Jets couldn’t agree on an extension last offseason.

Maye has expressed a desire to remain with the Jets and said he would not request a trade.

“They know I want to be here,” Maye said in mid-October, referring to the organization.

With the NFL trade deadline approaching Tuesday, Maye will soon find out if he’s sticking in New York for the rest of the season.
