Jets' latest debacle an embarrassing loss to Bills

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.Y. _ Bye Jets.

It could be bye for Todd Bowles and some of his coaches, too.

This is not the way Bowles, his staff or the Jets wanted to go into their bye week. They were humiliated by the previously offensively challenged Bills at home, 41-10, Sunday. The Jets put up no resistance at MetLife Stadium, and head into the bye with a 3-7 record after four straight losses.

This was the kind of performance that gets coaches fired. The defense was awful, the offense extremely inept and the team didn't compete overall.

Jets ownership was looking for progress this season after back-to-back 5-11 finishes under Bowles, but this team has taken steps backward the last several weeks. It's rare for coaching changes in-season, but it wouldn't be surprising if there was some sort of shakeup at this point.

The Jets were booed roundly by their fans less than a minute into the game _ when they gave up their first touchdown _ and it continued throughout. The Jets allowed four touchdowns in the first half, and trailed 31-3 at halftime.

Buffalo (3-7) isn't the Rams or Saints. The Bills have the worst offense in the league. They scored just one touchdown in their previous three games, and only three in the last six games. The Bills finished with five Sunday.

This was a Bills team led by newly signed Matt Barkley, their fourth-string quarterback who hadn't played an NFL game since 2016. But he had the Bills' offense humming.

Barkley was 15-for-25 for 232 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Robert Foster, just called up from Buffalo's practice squad, caught three passes for 105 yards. Running back LeSean McCoy rushed for 113 yards and two TDs. The Bills totaled 451 yards of offense.

Playing without Sam Darnold, who was sidelined with a strained foot, the Jets had their same offensive issues with veteran Josh McCown running the team. This does not reflect well on coordinator Jeremy Bates, whose offense hasn't been able to get anything going for four weeks now.

The Jets had one yard of total offense in the first half. They had four straight three-and-outs to start the game, and didn't record their first first down until there was 7:15 left in the half.

It took a 55-yard Jason Myers field goal as time expired in the first half for the Jets to get on the board. Isaiah Crowell's 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was the Jets' first TD in two games.

The Bills played carefree and took risks, and the Jets played tight, predictable, ineffective football. McCown was 17-for-34 for 135 yards and threw two interceptions. The Jets ended up with 199 yards of offense.

The Jets were outclassed by the Bills on their first play from scrimmage, setting the tone for the day.

Barkley connected with Foster on a 47-yard completion. The Bills went right at cornerback Trumaine Johnson, who was playing for the first time since Week 4. On their next play, McCoy took it 28 yards for the rushing score.

The Bills went ahead 14-0 on their third series on a drive that was extended when Buffalo converted a fake punt on fourth-and-6. They scored when tight end Jason Croom recovered receiver Zay Jones' fumble after a reception in the end zone.

Adding insult to insult, the Bills' third touchdown was a 7-yard pass to tackle Dion Dawkins that made it 24-0 with 7:58 left in the half. The 6-5, 320-pound Dawkins, who had just been announced as an eligible receiver, was wide open in the end zone.
