Jets ink fourth-round pick James Morgan

The Jets signed another draft pick Monday, announcing a done deal with fourth-rounder James Morgan.

The quarterback out of Florida International signed a four-year deal worth about $4 million. Morgan’s cap charge will be $610,000 in 2020, according to Over The Cap.

A native of Green Bay, Morgan grew up near Lambeau Field. He went on to play for Bowling Green before transferring to Florida International. He was solid there over his last two collegiate seasons, completing 420-683 passes for 5,312 yards, 40 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

The Jets drafted Morgan hoping he can be a serviceable backup for years to come. However, he will likely find himself further down the depth chart in 2020. With Sam Darnold entrenched as the starter, Joe Flacco will become the backup once he fully recovers from neck surgery. That isn’t supposed to happen in time for Week 1, however, meaning Darnold’s backup to begin the season is still up in the air.

Morgan has a chance to win that job, but David Fales is a veteran with experience in Adam Gase’s offense. With that in mind, it’s more likely that Morgan starts his Jets career on the practice squad.
