Jets injury report: Sam Darnold suffers left thumb sprain

Sam Darnold just can’t catch a break.

After battling mono and having a toenail removed already this season, the quarterback injured his left thumb in Sunday’s 29-15 loss to Jacksonville.

Darnold had his thumb taped up, but Adam Gase told reporters after the game that it was nothing more than a sprain on his non-throwing hand. He will be further evaluated, but he should be fine for next Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins.

Darnold said he sprained his thumb when he was sacked from behind by Jaguars rookie Josh Allen and fumbled the ball out of bounds. He was sacked eight times on the day.

The Jets quarterback didn’t seem plagued by his injuries during Sunday’s game, he just wasn’t very good. Darnold now has seven interceptions in the last two games. He referred to this stretch as “two of my worst games ever.” Darnold completed 70 percent of his passes for 218 yards and threw two touchdowns to Ryan Griffin Sunday, but he also had three interceptions.

Obviously, Darnold needs to be better, but the Jets have to do a better job of protecting their quarterback. He’s taking a beating out there and New York’s already seen what the offense looks like without him under center.
