Jets hiring Todd Downing as passing game coordinator

The Jets are adding more veteran presence to their offensive staff. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Jets are hiring former Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing as their passing game coordinator.

Downing has coached in the NFL since 2005 and has been an offensive coordinator for two different teams in his career. He spent the last two seasons running the offense for the Titans and was also the OC for the Raiders in 2017.

Downing’s resume also includes helping develop Matthew Stafford and Derek Carr during their early years in the NFL as well as working with Ryan Tannehill in Tennessee. He has coached quarterbacks for the Lions, Bills and Raiders as well as tight ends for the Vikings before being hired by Mike Vrabel to coach tight ends in 2019. Two years later, he became the offensive coordinator.

Downing reunites with new offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Downing was Buffalo’s quarterbacks coach in 2014 while Hackett was the offensive coordinator under head coach Doug Marrone.

Downing was let go by the Titans after getting arrested and charged with DUI and speeding following the team’s Thursday night game in November against the Packers. Downing spent a few days in jail earlier this month as a result.
