Jets hire Adam Gase to become next head coach, sources say

The search is over.

The Jets will be hiring former Dolphins head coach Adam Gase to be their next head coach, according to sources. Gase will stay in the AFC East after going 23-26 in three seasons in Miami.

Gang Green pulled the trigger on the most important hire in franchise history after an exhaustive search that included interviews with eight candidates. Gase's prior coaching experience coupled with his track record of developing and helping cultivating quarterbacks makes him a smart choice for a franchise bent on cultivating Sam Darnold's prodigious talents.

Gang Green's search took an interesting twist moments before word surfaced that Gase would be in the new guy in charge. Baylor's Matt Rhule was eliminated after a discrepancy over staffing issues, according to sources. The Jets targeted the coveted program builder that breathed life into Temple and Baylor in recent years before he bailed after team decision makers balked at the idea of him bringing his own offensive coordinator.

Rhule did not want to helm a staff assembled, in part, by general manager Mike Maccagnan and vice president of player personnel Brian Heimerdinger, according to sources.

Regardless, Gase has the experience and expertise to move the Jets forward.
