Jets GM Joe Douglas intends to make use of waiver wire, explore trade market with preseason winding down

Jets general manager Joe Douglas is doing all he can to ensure New York has the best 53-man roster possible come Week 1 of the regular season.

Douglas disclosed that he plans on taking advantage of New York’s place on the waiver wire and exploring the trade market with the preseason winding down while speaking to the media prior to Gang Green’s Week 3 preseason showdown with the Saints. The Jets currently have No. 3 waiver priority, putting them in a position to land a potential impact player should one come available.

“We plan on using it,” Douglas told reporters. “I’m fired up.”

With holes at linebacker and cornerback, outside additions are likely as Douglas works to improve New York’s roster. He has been impressed with Frankie Luvu, Jordan Jenkins and Tarell Basham throughout training camp, but upgrading at EDGE is a priority for the Jets and numerous other teams around the league. Douglas also noted that cornerback is a position the Jets will focus on upgrading moving forward.

Douglas also did not rule out the possibility of a trade should the right opportunity come along. There aren’t many big names available for the taking right now, but if one becomes available, Douglas would consider moving future draft picks in order to make a deal happen.

Whether or not impact players who pique Douglas’ interest become available remains to be seen, but there’s no question that New York’s first-year general manager will be aggressive exploring all possible additions before the regular season kicks off.
