Jets GM hopeful Teddy Bridgewater can find a starting job

It was less than a year ago that the Jets took a flier on Teddy Bridgewater in free agency. Now, the 26-year-old quarterback is hoping another team is willing to do the same.

Bridgewater was prepared to enter the 2018 season in competition with Josh McCown when he signed with New York. However, the Jets elected to trade up and select Sam Darnold in the NFL draft. In doing so, one of the veterans became expendable.

That’s when New Orleans came calling in search of a seasoned backup for Drew Brees. After Bridgewater’s promising preseason with New York, the Saints offered a 2019 third-round pick in exchange for the quarterback. Gang Green, after trading away multiple assets to move up for Darnold, pulled the trigger on the deal.

Now, after a season in New Orleans, Bridgewater is a free agent yet again. He is the healthiest he has been in years and offers plenty of upside for a team capable of developing a quarterback.

Mike Maccagnan after signing and helping to rehab Bridgewater last year, hopes the signal-caller can land a starting job.

“I would hope very much that he gets an opportunity to go play and become a starter this year. I think he has the ability to do it,” the Jets GM told reporters Wednesday at the NFL combine.

“He did a great job with us, and we’re very happy for him. It kind of worked out well for us and I think hopefully it’s going to work out well for Teddy.”
