Jets GM candidate failed to land entry-level job with Gang Green 20 years ago

Joe Douglas is no stranger to interviewing for a job with the New York Jets.

The Eagles vice president of player personnel just finished up his interview for Gang Green’s GM job after Mike Maccagnan was relieved of his duties last month. However, Douglas has some prior experience hunting for jobs with New York.

According to the Daily News’ Manish Mehta, Douglas interviewed for an entry-level position with the Jets 20 years ago. He didn’t get the job.

After the Jets passed on him, Douglas moved onto the Ravens, where he started out as a player personnel assistant. As the years went by, Douglas moved up all the way to the team’s national scout. So after 16 years with Baltimore, Douglas was hired by the Bears as their director of college scouting in 2015. He has been the Eagles vice president of player personnel for three seasons now.

Douglas is the presumed favorite to land the Jets job, as he and Adam Gase have a close relationship. He has also played a key role in building Super Bowl-winning teams with the Ravens and Eagles, so he has a knack for finding talent in the draft. That’s something his predecessor struggled with aside from a few first-round picks.

Now, twenty years later, Douglas could finally land a job with the Jets. If so, he’ll make a lot more than an entry-level staffer.
