Jets Free Agent Profile: What to do with RB Bilal Powell?

With the Jets having three capable running backs on their roster already, and with possible additions on the way, it seems like Bilal Powell’s days in New York are over.

A fourth-round pick out of Louisville, Powell has been a key component of the Jets backfield since 2011. In his time playing for the green and white, Powell ran the ball 791 times for 3,446 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also was quite feared in the passing game, recording 204 carer receptions for 1,567 yards and five touchdowns.

Powell is coming off a season that was cut short due to a neck injury. His base salary was $4 million in 2018. For the Jets to even consider bringing him back as a depth piece, it would have to be on a deal worth $1.5-$2 million, if that.

Pros of bringing him back

Powell has been a fixture for nearly a decade. He is the perfect complimentary back and always filled his role as a reliable pass-catcher and a speed back. He’s always been a guy that’s thrived in a conservative role, a role that wouldn’t change if the Jets were to keep him around.

Powell could also be a mentor to Elijah McGuire and Trenton Cannon. McGuire could especially benefit from Powell, as he seems to be an exact replica of the veteran.

Cons of bringing him back

Powell is coming off a debilitating neck injury that required surgery. He is also on the wrong side of 30 and unless you’re a Hall of Fame talent, that means your time as an NFL back is nearly over.

McGuire looked capable of being a backup to the likely free agent that the Jets sign to take the bulk of the carries. With Isaiah Crowell likely getting cut, and the Jets probably drafting or  signing a running back, there is no room on the depth chart or enough touches to go around for Powell.

The Verdict

Although Powell has been a staple of the Jets offense for years, his time in New York is likely over. Money is not of an issue in this case, but with Powell’s age and injury history, the Jets are better to move on. It is likely that the next contract Powell signs will be elsewhere. Don’t be surprised to see him retire with Gang Green when that day comes, though.
