Jets’ first unofficial depth chart contains little surprise

The Jets have released their first unofficial depth chart, but there are not too many surprises with the season fast approaching.

Depth charts are not a set of strict rules that teams must follow, but they do give some indication as to what a player’s role or expectations might be. Here’s a quick look at the Jets’ depth charts in all three facets of the game, as well as some notes.

Offense

The most notable development here is that recent free agent signing Chris Hogan is listed as a starting receiver, while rookie Denzel Mims is a second-teamer. This is hardly a surprise, though, as Mims missed significant time during training camp due to a hamstring injury.

George Fant, as expected, is listed as the starting right tackle over sophomore Chuma Edoga. Meanwhile, we know that Joe Flacco will not be the backup quarterback to start the season as he recovers from neck surgery, Instead, David Fales or Mike White — most likely Fales — will be promoted from the practice squad as rookie James Morgan gets some seasoning on the sidelines.

Defense

The Jets’ defensive depth chart is a bit more irrelevant given the number of rotational players it has and Gregg Williams’ penchant for moving pieces around.

That said, sophomore Bless Austin is listed as a starting corner after ending last season in Williams’ doghouse. At inside linebacker, the Jets went with veterans in Avery Williamson and Neville Hewitt. Lastly, Tarrell Basham appears to be the second outside linebacker opposite Jordan Jenkins.

Special Teams

Nothing unexpected here, though it is noteworthy that Braxton Berrios is listed as the preferred option for both return jobs. Expect rookie Ashytyn Davis to make an impact there as well this season.
