Jets decline option on S Terrence Brooks

Terrence Brooks will be looking for a new team come March.

The Jets announced on Tuesday that they have declined Brooks’ option for the 2019 season. By releasing him, New York saves $1.8 million in salary cap space.

The 26-year-old safety was a third-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2014 out of Florida State. He played in 11 games in his rookie season, but suffered a torn ACL and MCL which landed him on injured reserve. He finished his rookie season with 19 tackles and three pass defenses.

Brooks made it back for the start of the 2015 season, but only played in 12 games. He had eight tackles and one pass defense. Ultimately, he was released before the beginning of the 2016 season.

The Eagles claimed Brooks the day after he was released by the Ravens and played in 11 games for them. He also recorded his first career interception with Philadelphia.

Just before the start of the 2017 season, the Eagles traded Brooks to the Jets in exchange for Dexter McDougle. The safety played in 15 games for Gang Green in 2017 and had two interceptions in the same game against Adam Gase’s Miami Dolphins. After that season, Brooks was rewarded with a two-year contract extension. In 2018, Brooks finally played in all 16 games and had nine tackles and one pass defense.

Brooks will now get the opportunity to restart his career with a new team in free agency, as the Jets will look to use their savings wisely in free agency.
