Jets cut former first-rounder Dee Milliner

Mike Maccagnan just dropped another one of John Idzik's big draft picks.

In addition to releasing 2014 draft-pick Jace Amaro, as Newsday reported, the Jets have also waived/injured former first-rounder Dee Milliner.

Like Amaro, Milliner was selected by Idzik, the Jets general manager from 2013-14. But his successor, Maccagnan, wasn't interested in keeping either player around. Should Milliner go unclaimed by another team, he'll revert back to the Jets' IR list.

The Jets tried unsuccessfully to trade Milliner, the ninth overall pick in 2013, in advance of Saturday's 4 p.m. EDT deadline. But ultimately the organization decided that it was better to dump the disappointing defensive back _ and pay his guaranteed $2.1 million salary _ than keep him as a backup in Todd Bowles' secondary.

Milliner, 24, has dealt with a handful of injuries since making it to the NFL, including a wrist injury that required surgery and a torn Achilles tendon last year. His progress during this year's training camp was also slowed by bicep and hamstring injuries.

After Idzik traded away star cornerback Darrelle Revis just days before the 2013 draft, he took Milliner as his first-ever draft pick. Now, three years later, Milliner is gone and only seven of the 19 draft selections from the Idzik era are currently on the Jets roster.
