Jets cut another member of Mike Maccagnan’s 2017 draft class

After a poor performance in Thursday’s preseason opener, the Jets parted with CB Derrick Jones on Saturday.

The team waived Jones, who was a 2017 draft pick. The new regime under Joe Douglas has not been shy about parting with former Mike Maccagnan draft picks and waiving Jones leaves just Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye and Elijah McGuire from a nine-man class.

Jones had been working primarily with the second team and was slowed down by a knee injury this summer. On Thursday, he gave up a 39-yard completion down the left sideline to Giants WR Alonzo Russell.

The Jets’ cornerback depth looked awful on Thursday and so New York opted to move on from Jones. UDFA Kyron Brown had been ahead of Jones on the depth chart, while ex-Eagles CB Alex Brown was claimed off waivers this past week.

As a corresponding move for waiving Jones, the Jets re-signed TE Nick Truesdell. The well-traveled Truesdell originally signed with the Jets back on Aug. 4 but was released two days later after New York acquired OL Alex Lewis from Baltimore.

Truesdell spent time in both the IFL and the AFL and was in training camp with the Colts in 2016. He then was on the Vikings practice squad for a year before joining the Salt Lake Stallions in the Alliance for American Football.

With Ryan Griffin and Trevon Wesco failing to make an impact in the Jets’ first preseason game, Truesdell is back for added competition.
