For now, Bryce Petty isn't injured reserve-bound.
An MRI Friday morning revealed the Jets' third-string quarterback suffered "just a bruised shoulder" in Thursday's preseason finale loss to the Eagles, head coach Todd Bowles announced via conference call.
Bowles said Petty didn't suffer any structural damage in his right throwing shoulder, nor did he suffer a dislocation. As a result, the second-year quarterback won't be going on IR before the Jets make their 53-man roster cuts by Saturday afternoon.
"No, it's too early to tell," Bowles said. "We're still waiting to see the recovery time. And we're just going to assess him this week and see how it goes with treatment."
After his 44-yard touchdown pass to Robby Anderson put the Jets up 6-0 in the first quarter, Petty was leveled by defensive end Bryan Braman, who easily beat rookie Brandon Shell. The crushing blow _ which knocked Petty out of the game _ was delivered less than 12 minutes into the game.
With four quarterbacks already on their roster, some wondered whether the organization would place Petty on IR as a way of stashing him in the organization without sacrificing a regular-season roster spot. But, for now at least, he isn't a candidate for IR, his coach said.
NFL teams have until 4 p.m. EDT Saturday to submit their 53-man rosters. But according to Bowles, the Jets still have yet to decide whether they're keeping Petty, along with starter Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith and rookie Christian Hackenberg.
