Jets bring QB Joe Flacco back in trade with Eagles

Joe Flacco is headed back to New Jersey.

The Jets traded a sixth-round pick to the Eagles for the veteran quarterback, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Flacco will presumably start in place of the injured Zach Wilson, who will miss a few weeks after spraining his PCL. Schefter added that the pick could turn into a fifth-rounder depending on how much Flacco plays this season.

Flacco played in five games and started four for the Jets in place of Sam Darnold in 2020. Flacco wasn’t terrible during his time with New York, but still went 0-4. He completed 55.2 percent of his passes for 864 yards and six touchdowns with just three interceptions.

The Jets had an interest in re-signing Flacco this past offseason before he joined the Eagles, but they decided to roll with their depth at the time. Clearly, that thinking changed after Wilson’s injury and backup Mike White’s mediocre play against the Patriots. Flacco’s familiarity with the Jets’ roster likely played a major role in this move, but this is a new offense and it’s strange to see Joe Douglas give up assets for a 36-year-old quarterback the Jets could have signed outright.
