Jets bring in pair of running backs for visits

The Jets are looking for depth at running back on the free agent market.

New York brought in former Chiefs RB Spencer Ware for a visit on Wednesday and will bring in former Packers and Ravens RB Ty Montgomery on Thursday.

After signing Le’Veon Bell to a lucrative deal, the Jets are looking for a formidable backup on the depth chart next to Elijah McGuire and Trenton Cannon.

With the Jets sniffing around the running back market for depth, Ware presents himself as the perfect contingency plan behind Bell.

With multiple injuries to Jamal Charles, Ware filled in successfully as a starter in Kansas City. When Kareem Hunt was suspended and released by the Chiefs in 2018, Ware stepped up into the starting role once again.

During his time in Kansas City, Ware had 340 career rushing attempts for 1,580 yards and 11 touchdowns. In the passing game, Ware caught 59 passes for 676 yards and two touchdowns.

Montgomery, meanwhile, would bring the Jets some much-needed help in the return game, as well as being a versatile back. Originally, Montgomery was drafted out of Stanford as a wide receiver but shifted to the backfield when the injury bug hit the Packers running back room.

As both a wideout and running back for the Packers and Ravens, Montgomery has 107 career receptions for 892 yards and three touchdowns. Out of the backfield, Montgomery has 192 rushes for 932 yards and seven touchdowns.

Adam Gase said the Jets need to be mindful of Bell’s touches, even if he presents himself to be New York’s most valuable offensive player.

Bringing in other running backs for visits indicates the Jets are serious about Gase’s claim. It also has to do with both Cannon and De’Angelo Henderson being very raw prospects.
