Jets boost analytics department by hiring a familiar face

The Jets have added a familiar face to their analytics department.

According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, New York hired Matt Sheldon as their new director of football research and strategy. Sheldon has worked with both Adam Gase and Joe Douglas, as each duo spent time together in Miami and Chicago, respectively.

Sheldon started his NFL career as a defensive assistant with the St. Louis Rams in 2001, where he also worked alongside Joe Vitt, the Jets outside linebackers coach. He then joined the Bills in 2006 as a linebackers coach and elevated the games of players such as London Fletcher and Paul Posluszny. Sheldon then moved onto the Vikings in 2010 as an assistant defensive backs coach before leaving for the Montreal Alouettes in 2012 as a linebackers coach.

After one season in the CFL, Sheldon took a break from football before returning in 2015 with the Bears. He was hired as their director of analytics and football research. That’s where he met Douglas before the latter left for the Eagles. In 2017, Sheldon was named the director of football research and strategy with the Dolphins, which is when he met Gase.

Sheldon’s main job will be focusing on in-game strategy and developing staff members and players.
