EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. _ The Jets' last home game of the season _ and likely the last one at MetLife Stadium for Todd Bowles as their coach _ ended like so many have under his leadership.
A blown lead, lack of discipline and composure and an inability to finish all led to the Jets' 44-38 overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday afternoon.
The Jets led the game by 15 points in the fourth quarter, but they couldn't stop Aaron Rodgers, or themselves from committing penalties. Rodgers connected on a 16-yard touchdown pass with Davante Adams with 6:23 in overtime to send the Jets (4-11) to the fifth straight loss at home.
The lack of discipline and composure was evident early as defensive end Leonard Williams was ejected in the first half for throwing a punch at Bryan Bulaga. But it continued with so many costly penalties.
In overtime, the Packers won the toss and got the ball first. On third-and-10 from the Packers' 40, Trumiane Johnson was called for defensive pass interference on a sideline throw from Rodgers that he just lofted up because he was under pressure.
It was a 33-yard penalty and gave the Packers the ball on the Jets' 27. Two players later, the Jets were flagged for having 12-men on the field, off-setting an illegal shift penalty by the offense. Later, Buster Skrine was called for defensive holding inside the 10.
After a Rodgers' TD run on first-and-6 was negated by a hold on Green Bay, Rodgers threaded the needle and found Adams for the game-winning touchdown.
Rodgers finished 37-for-55 for 442 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for two more scores and a two-point conversion.
Rookie Sam Darnold had one of his best games of the season. He completed 24-of-35 passes for 341 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. But Darnold never got the ball in overtime.
Second-year running back Elijah McGuire scored for the third straight week, picking up a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown. Robby Anderson scored in his third straight as well, catching nine passes for 140 yards and a touchdown.
The Jets were outscored 18-3 in the fourth. Rodgers put the Packers up 38-35 with 1:12 left after a 1-yard TD run and his two-point conversion.
Pro Bowl kicker Jason Myers tied it with a 33-yard field goal with 17 seconds to go in regulation.
With the Jets up 35-30, the Packers got the ball with 3:12 left at their own 17. Rodgers was brilliant. It took five plays to get the Packers to the Jets' 24. On second down. Rodgers scrambled for 23 yards to the Jets' 1-yard line.
The Jets' defense stood up the first three downs. But then Rodgers scored. He extended his arm and the ball just got over the plane with 1:12 left.
The Packers went for two, and Andre Roberts intercepted it and returned it all the way. But he was called for defensive holding. Rodgers ran it in on the second try to give the Packers a 38-35 lead.
Andre Roberts, who had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, returned the kickoff for 51 yards to the Packers' 38. Darnold completed his first two passes to Chris Herndon, for 9 and 12 yards respectively, to the 15. But Darnold's next three passes were incomplete.
Myers, who missed a field goal earlier in the game, made the 33-yard attempt to tie it.
