Jetro Willems understood to be open to Newcastle United return ahead of contract expiry

Jetro Willems will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season with no new contract offer on the table from Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Dutchman is closing in on full fitness after a knee injury - sustained playing for Newcastle against Manchester City 11 months ago - cost him a big chunk of his career.

The 26-year-old was keen on making his move to Tyneside a permanent one last season before disaster struck and the club turned to Danny Rose on loan last January.

Willems could even be available for a nominal fee in January when Newcastle will again get the chance to assess their options in the window.

With Paul Dummett out injured with a hamstring injury, Steve Bruce could need cover in that area in the second half of the campaign.

Chronicle Live understands that Willems would indeed be open to a possible move back to Newcastle but the club's stance is very much based on the left-sided defender proving his fitness again.

It is believed that Newcastle will on his list of possible destinations and his representatives could well be in touch with the Magpies in due course.

Willems said last June, when his initial loan expired: "You made me feel at home and supported me throughout the whole season.

"I really appreciate that and I wish you all luck, success and health.

"I’m now going to see what the future holds, but I want you to know that you have a special place in my heart."
