Jetro Willems shares fitness update and Newcastle United fans love it

Jetro Willems may be without a football club right now, but the Dutch international is keeping himself in impressive shape.

Willems is set to be a free agent this summer after German side Eintracht Frankfurt announced they would not be offering the left-back a new deal.

The 27-year-old spent the first half of the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Newcastle and made a lasting impression on the club's supporters.

Brilliant goals against both Liverpool and Manchester City ensured his brief stay on Tyneside was memorable and all things seemed geared towards Willems making the move permanent last summer.

However, a serious knee injury picked up in the January 2020 win over Chelsea cut short his loan spell and despite making a full recovery, he is yet to play a minute of senior football since.

But the former PSV defender has made moves to allay any fears over his fitness by posting a video of himself exercising on a treadmill, looking in great shape.

Willems - who remains the youngest player to ever play at a European Championships - is keen to kickstart his career and would jump at the chance to re-join the Magpies this summer.

In an exclusive interview with Chronicle Live, Willems said: "I had a great time at Newcastle and for me I want something else. I had a good time in Germany and won some titles and some nice things but I wanted something else.

"Of course Newcastle is a very nice option for me. I was there for a long time - like, half a year - and I was enjoying the moment there. It's a great option and it's a club which knows me, I know them. It would be great to join them."

As such, his latest social media update left fans very excited.

One fan replied: "How many miles left to Newcastle? #Jetroscominghome "

While another said: "Come home, King."
