Jetro Willems gives most candid answer yet when asked by Dutch TV about Newcastle future

Jetro Willems has told Dutch TV that he will give Newcastle "no choice" but to sign him permanently if he continues to perform the way he is - as he confirmed his preference is to remain at United.

On loan from Eintracht Frankfurt, Willems has been an excellent addition for the Magpies so far and scored again on Saturday against Manchester City.

There is the option of a permanent transfer at the end of his season-long loan with the Magpies set a fee of around £10million for the Holland international. And Willems, who has previously stayed non-committal, told Ziggo Sport on Saturday that he intends to give United "no choice" in the matter.

Asked about his future, Willems said he wasn't sure what Newcastle's plans were. He added: "I’m not so concerned about it at the moment. But if I keep on going, I won’t give Newcastle a choice.”

When the interviewer noted that he was referring to Newcastle as "us" and it seemed as if he had already made his choice about whether he wanted to stay, he said: "Yes, that’s actually right!"

Willems says he is enjoying the Premier League, has lost weight and gained muscle. "I am fitter. The intensity here is much higher than in the Bundesliga, I think - and that suits me," he said.

The wing-back spoke highly of Steve Bruce and revealed that the Head Coach keeps his messages "simple", asking him to keep the ball and create chances.

It is a formula that Willems hopes can earn him a recall to the Dutch national side and a call-up to the Euro 2020 Holland squad.

"I don't lie awake thinking about it but I think everyone wants to be there," Willems said about getting back into the national side.

"I have not yet been picked, so I will continue to do my best at the club and we will see. My ambitions are with the Dutch national team, but everyone has that same ambition."
