Jet2 plane heading to UK forced to land in Portugal to ditch disruptive passenger

A plane heading to the UK had to divert to Portugal so a disruptive passenger could be taken off the flight. The incident affected a Jet2 flight from Gran Canaria to Newcastle Airport on Sunday.

Flight number LS542 landed in Porto, 1,100 miles away from its destination after taking off at around 11.30pm and was diverted at around 2am. The flight was diverted due to the airline's "zero-tolerance" approach to disruptive passengers, the Chronicle reports

Jet2 said: "We can confirm that flight LS542 from Gran Canaria to Newcastle diverted to Porto.... so that a disruptive passenger could be offloaded.

"As a family-friendly airline, we take a zero-tolerance approach to disruptive behaviour. We will not hesitate to vigorously pursue any costs incurred as a result."

News of the diverted flight comes after Jet2 hit the headlines this week after a pair of brothers were given a £50,000 bill after forcing a flight from Stansted to divert to Corfu, the Mirror reports.

It was reported that passengers had been forced to wait on the tarmac for three hours and 45 minutes while the authorities dealt with the pair. Phil Ward, Jet2 managing director, branded the incident as "deplorable" and "completely unacceptable."
