Jet2 launches direct flights from Leeds to breathtaking island with Europe's most active volcano

Jet2 is now flying direct from Leeds Bradford Airport to Sicily.

The airline and travel agent, based at the Yeadon airport, will be running flights every Wednesday to the Mediterranean island until October 26. The service complements direct flights from Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) to the other popular Italian destinations of Naples, Pisa, Rome and Verona.

Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said: "The addition of this stunning Italian island to our Summer 22 programme from LBA has proven to be extremely popular with customers and independent travel agents looking for glorious sunshine alongside that authentic Italian experience. Sicily is a fantastic addition to our enormous Summer 22 programme, and it means we are extending our popular Italian offering significantly from LBA."

So what has Sicily got and why should you pick the island for your holiday? First off, it has long, dry and hot summers.

It has a dramatic, rugged landscape with mountains, including Mount Etna which is Europe's most active volcano. Fear not though, as the viscous lava it ejects moves slowly. Only a few people have been seriously injured by Etna in modern times.

Sicily has fabulous seaside resorts including Taormina, Taormina Mare, Giardini Naxos, Syracuse, Cefalu and Campofelice di Roccella. Its proximity to the Middle East and North Africa, plus its fertile soils, makes for some outstanding cuisine.

The island is rich in ancient historic sites and buzzing cities like Palermo. It was also the birthplace of a significant proportion of American Italian immigrants.

Yes, the island is associated with the Mafia; scenes from the gangster movie classic The Godfather were filmed there. Indeed, the character Don Vito Corleone comes from Sicily.

But while the Mafia are still active in Sicily – as they are in much of Italy – they are not interested in tourists. Sicily is, in fact, one of the safest places in Italy.
