Jet2 insists foreign holidays to go ahead despite government warnings

Jet2 are insisting that their plans to resume holidays and flights still have the green light, despite the government's warnings that international travel might not resume until July at the earliest.

With a base at Leeds Bradford Airport, Jet2 are anxious to take to the skies once more, bringing customers sun and relaxation - despite the warnings from the government.

Flights are currently legally allowed from May 17, but there are increased concerns that the restrictions on overseas travel may be extended.

The UK government are said to be currently preparing legislation that could mean hopeful holiday makers are slapped with a £5,000 fines if they attempt to disregard the rules.

In response to the fears, Jet2 Chief executive Steve Heapy said: “We once again welcome the fact that the UK government is continuing to show a clear ambition to reopen international travel, and, like our customers, we look forward to further detail in the coming weeks so that we can get flying again.

“Despite reports, it is important to note that these are draft laws which are designed to prevent people travelling before May 17. We are currently planning to commence our flights and holidays programme on that date, in line with government advice, and we are monitoring the situation very closely."

The PM has indicated he will give further updates early next month ahead of the Global Travel Taskforce report scheduled for April 12.

An Office for National Statistic survey estimated that around 13 million people are planning a staycation this year, showing a colossal leap in 'stay-cations' as the UK prepares to ease its way from lockdown.

Beginning on March 29, up to six people or two households will be allowed to meet in an outdoor space but social distancing rules must still be followed.
