Jet2 flights to Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands cancelled as thousands more holidays scrapped

People hoping to jet off to Spain, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands or Portugal during the summer holidays will not be able to soak up the sun in the Mediterranean until the end of August.

That's after Leeds-based airline Jet2.com announced further cancellations to Spanish holidays in line with government guidance.

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office currently advises against all but essential international travel to Spain, with people coming back now having to quarantine for 14 days.

Jet2 have not operated any flights to Spain since last month though, after cancelling all Spanish holidays at the end of July.

They initially revealed that flights to Spain would resume in mid-August, but the worrying rise in coronavirus infection rates abroad has seen Jet2 extend the cancellations.

People flying to the Canary Islands or the Balearic Islands will no longer be able to fly until August 23 at the earliest.

For those hoping to fly to mainland Spain or Portugal, the earliest restart date for flights is August 24.

The restart date for flights to Cyprus have not been affected by the latest announcement though. People are still able to fly Larnaca on Monday, August 17 and flights to Paphos will resume a day later, on Tuesday, August 18.

In a statement, the tour operator said: "In line with FCO travel advice, we are constantly reviewing our flights and holiday programmes.

"Our programme is constantly being reviewed, so some additional changes may occur.

"Where this is the case, we will contact customers directly to discuss options.

"We will be in touch as soon as possible, so we urge affected customers not to contact us.

"We thank you for your patience and understanding at this time."
