Why Jet2 flight stopped off at Edinburgh shortly after leaving Glasgow Airport this morning

Glasgow flights have been stopping off at Edinburgh Airport to pick up passengers in order to avoid half-empty journeys.

Glasgow to Tenerife flights were sent to Edinburgh on Saturday and Sunday mornings to pick additional travellers.

Yesterday (Sunday) the Jet2 flight left Glasgow Airport at 9.32am – around 50 minutes later than planned – and was bound for Tenerife, with passengers scheduled to arrive at 1.25pm.

However just minutes after take-off, and with the Boeing 737-8MG aircraft just south west of Paisley, it headed east towards the Scottish capital.

The FlightRadar website suggests that the same journey was sent to Edinburgh Airport on Saturday morning. Jet2 said at the time these flights are running as normal.

After contacting Jet2 for further information on the nature of these changes, a spokesperson told Edinburgh Live that they were directed to make their way to Edinburgh Airport to collect additional passengers.

The number of people using air travel has dropped due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with people urged not to travel at the moment.
