Jet2 face mask rule that could catch some passengers out

Airline Jet2 resumed international flights this month, but has introduced a number of coronavirus protective measures that passengers must follow.

One notable difference from pre-pandemic travel is the requirement of face coverings while onboard and at the airport.

Many airlines have made face coverings compulsory while travelling - but Jet2 has specific requirements for the type of face masks that are to be worn.

Passengers must ensure they have a face mask that fits the requirements, or they may not be allowed to travel at all.

Jet2 has stated that the mask should cover your nose and mouth, and should be ‘"either a protective or medical-style mask, or a fitted face covering.

"Coverings such as scarves, snoods, balaclavas or any similar items aren’t acceptable for travel."

While face coverings such as scarves are recognised as sufficient under the government’s new laws regarding face coverings in public spaces, the airline is more strict about what constitutes an appropriate face mask.

Passengers who usually use a scarf or balaclava as a face covering must ensure they get a fitted face mask for their Jet2 flight.

The face mask should be kept on throughout the whole flight, and should only be temporarily removed to eat or drink.

Children under six, and people with a disability that impacts their ability to wear a mask, are exempt from the requirement.

It is advised that passengers stock up on face masks prior to travelling, as it is recommended that masks are changed every four hours.

Passengers must remember that face masks are required on their return flights too, and be sufficiently prepared.

A number of other coronavirus protection measures will be in place while onboard that aim to minimise passengers' contact with other people and surfaces.

A statement on Jet2’s website states that while onboard staff will "ask you to stay in your seat as much as possible, avoid queuing in the aisles and use contactless payment if you can."

Crew will also be wearing masks, and in order to minimise contact they will not be able to help passengers put belongings in overhead storage.

It is important that passengers practise good hand hygiene while travelling.

The airline will not be offering hand sanitiser on board so it is recommended that travellers bring their own - as long as it is under the required 100ml.
