Jet2 boss hits out at travel green list as Spain, Turkey, Italy and France excluded

Jet2's chief executive officer Steve Heapy has stated that the airline is 'not giving up on any destinations yet'.

Speaking to Travel Weekly, he said that the government's list was disappointing, with the number of destinations smaller than expected.

He spoke on Travel Weekly's webcast of his anger around what he believes is a lack of clarity.

He had said: "The criteria hasn't been uniform.

"There is only one destination that we do, that works well and when the green list was announced, the message was 'you can go somewhere but it'll be a nightmare.

"We're needing clarity for Ireland, for all travel - the government are public servants and if this was a private service, there would be heads on spikes."

Mr Heapy went on to call the handling of travel post-pandemic "disgraceful" and said he didn't agree with the initial list.

He was concerned that there were no countries currently on the amber list, that looked like they could be moved to green.

However, he emphasised: "I'm not giving up on any destinations yet".

The green list as it currently stands includes:

  • Portugal including the Azores and Madeira
  • Gibraltar
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Singapore
  • Brunei
  • Iceland
  • Faroe Islands
  • Falkland Islands
  • South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
  • Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha
  • Israel and Jerusalem

However as many eagle-eyed tourists will notice, the list excludes popular holiday destinations such as Spain, Turkey, Italy and France.
