Package holiday giant Jet2 has announced plans to recommence its flights and vacation programme this summer - despite the Government advising against all non-essential travel indefinitely.
In an email to customers who had booked deals, the airline, which flies to several European destinations from East Midlands Airport, said it would start its flights again from June 17.
The move means all trips booked for before this date are now cancelled.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office stepped up restrictions on foreign travel yesterday, April 6, because of the coronavirus pandemic and a growing number of global border closures.
It was originally stated non-essential travel would be blocked for 30 days from Tuesday, March 17. This has now been extended 'indefinitely' due to worldwide uncertainty.
But in a statement released today, April 7, a spokesperson for Jet2 said: "In view of the ongoing uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, we have taken the decision to recommence our flights and holidays programme on June 17.
"This means for customers travelling before this date, unfortunately your flights and holidays will not be operating.
"We will be contacting customers and dealing with all existing queries in departure date order, which we believe is the fairest way to handle this.
"The number of calls we have been receiving is unprecedented, so you do not need to make contact with us."
The statement added: "Although these are difficult times for everyone, the sun will come out again."
On March 15, Jet 2 flights to Spain were cancelled and some were diverted en route as the country shut its borders.
