A jet ski has crashed into a boat off the Welsh coast following a freak incident. Llandudno Coastguard said the crash happened on Good Friday near Conwy marina.
The coastguard said that the crash happened while the jet ski and the accompanying vessel were on their way to Puffin Island north-west of Conwy. One casualty was taken to the beacons site at Conwy where they were treated for minor injuries.
The coastguard said the incident had been caused by a “freak wave” in a statement shared on its social media pages. “A freak wave had knocked the jet ski off course and into the path of an accompanying boat,” the statement reads.
“Fortunately the jet ski operator had managed to jump clear before being struck by the boat himself. The casualty was thoroughly examined and his only injuries were some grazes to his shins, a lucky escape.”
The coastguard told the public that the crash should be a warning to others when taking to the water. “This was a group of four experienced jet skiers accompanied by a support boat and all involved were appropriately trained,” it added.
“This is an example of an accident which demonstrates the potential dangers of any activity at sea. If you are venturing out in a boat or on a jet ski make sure that you are wearing an appropriate flotation device, are carrying some method of reliable communication and have informed someone of your plans and planned return time. Should you get into difficulties please call the coastguard on VHF channel 16 or dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
