Jesy Nelson’s debut solo album has been delayed after she was told to go “back to the drawing board”, according to reports.

“The bosses felt sure there was potential there but they wanted her to go back to the drawing board. They felt the tracks would benefit from it – so that is what she has done,” a source told The Sun.

“She is determined to only play them the new music when it’s perfect, so they haven’t heard any more since then.”

The insider added that there are “high hopes” for Nelson’s album when it’s completed.

The Essex-born singer, 30, left girl group Little Mix in December 2020 and announced five months later that she had signed a solo record deal.

Since then, however, she has only put out one song, Boyz with US rapper Nicki Minaj, which peaked at number 4 in the UK singles chart.

The track was hit with controversy after Nelson was accused in the accompanying music video of black fishing - the practice of a non-black person trying to appear black.

Nelson addressed the accusations and said she never intended to cause offence, but the pressure to get it right with the rest of the album is now on.

The Standard has contacted a representative for Jesy Nelson for comment.

Nelson recently returned to the UK after spending time in the US working on her album.

While there, she shared that she had been in the recording studio with Black Eyed Peas star Will.i.am, who certainly knows a thing or two about producing hits.

Uploading a slew of images to Instagram of them in the studio together, she told her 8.8m followers: “Studio with one of my fave humans @iamwill,” followed by a white heart emoji.
