Jesus Christ Superstar to visit Liverpool Empire Theatre in huge UK tour

Popular musical Jesus Christ Superstar will visit the Liverpool Empire Theatre this October.

Following an array of sell-out shows in London and a huge tour of North America, the multiple award-winning show created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice will visit the Empire Theatre from Monday October 23 - Saturday October 28, 2023.

The huge UK tour will begin at Manchester’s Palace Theatre from September 11, 2023 and will visit cities such as Newcastle, Hull, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Birmingham, Blackpool and more. Wowing audiences for decades, the songs from Jesus Christ Superstar were originally released as a concept album and opened on Broadway in 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre.

It originally ran for eight years, and after 3,358 performances, it became the longest running musical in West End history at that time. The show has been reproduced regularly, with ITV competition 'Superstar' leading to Ben Forster being cast as Jesus in an arena tour of the show.

The show focuses on the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ, as seen through the eyes of Judas. Featuring songs such as 'I Don't Know How to Love Him', 'Gethsemane' and 'Superstar', the soundtrack of the album focuses on the rock genre.

Producer David Ian said: "I am thrilled to be taking this award-winning production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s much loved musical Jesus Christ Superstar on tour in 2023/2024. Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre has created a fresh and bold new version of a beloved classic which will enthrall both longtime fans of the show and delight those seeing it for the very first time".

Diane Belding, theatre director at the Liverpool Empire said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the much-loved Jesus Christ Superstar to the Empire this Autumn. It’s such an iconic musical and I know the people of the region will be just as excited as we are to see this brand new, reimagined production.”

The show will run at the Liverpool Empire Theatre from Monday October 23 to Saturday October 28. Tickets go on sale on Thursday February 24.
