Jesse Marsch thrown into Celtic manger mix as Red Bull Salzburg coach fits Hoops bill

Red Bull Salzburg coach Jesse Marsch has been tipped as the perfect fit for Celtic by former assistant boss John Collins.

The 47-year-old American coach won the double in his first season in the Bundesliga and is six points clear at the top this term.

It's his first role in Europe having spent the first chapter of his career in the MLS with Montreal Impact and New York Red Bulls. He won US coach of the year in 2015.

But it was in the Champions League against Liverpool that his coaching caught Collins' eye.

He said: “A name I’d throw in the hat would be Jesse Marsch, the American at Red Bull Salzburg. Sometimes you see a team in the Champions League turn in a performance that sticks in your mind.

“I remember seeing them play at Anfield and they were 3-0 down after 36 minutes, they got it back to 3-3 and lost 4-3.

“I thought ‘Wow!, that’s a good football coach’."

Frank Lampard is another that Collins feels could make the grade at Parkhead.

The former England great had a successful spell at Derby before leading a young Chelsea team into the Champions League against the odds.

It was only after spending significant funds this term on a rebuild that his career went off track and Collins feels his track record with younger players makes him an attractive proposition.

He said: “Frank Lampard has a good football brain and he was harshly treated at Chelsea. He developed young players and Celtic’s a club that signs young players that need developed, they don’t buy the finished article.

“I think Lampard’s of a similar ilk to Steven Gerrard - he’s a smart young guy and he was a terrific player.”
