Jesse Marsch already boasts perfect experience for unleashing Leeds United U23's talent

Given how slender Jesse Marsch's inherited squad is at Leeds United, it is reasonable to assume the question will be put to the American head coach within his first few weeks on the job: how does he plan to use the U23 squad?

Marcelo Bielsa's approach was an integrated one, but frustrated supporters at times.

He included several youngsters in first-team squads but their appearances were largely contingent on necessity, when no other senior alternatives - often playing out of position - were available.

The preference of Tyler Roberts over Joe Gelhardt up until Bielsa's Leeds crescendo was a particular bone of contention on the Elland Road terraces.

Throughout his coaching career, Marsch operated at clubs boasting a well-defined structure within the Red Bull sporting model.

At the speartip of the energy drink conglomerate's European club template is RB Leipzig in the German Bundesliga. One rung below is FC Red Bull Salzburg in Austria's top flight, who Marsch coached for two seasons, before acceding to the top job at Leipzig.

While these clubs are renowned for falling under the Red Bull sphere of influence, FC Liefering in Austria's second tier, are much more obscure but closely connected to their big brother.

Liefering officially act as a satellite club to Salzburg, as Salzburg do for Leipzig, albeit in an unofficial capacity.

Salzburg often bring in teenagers, or develop them through their own academy, before farming them out on loan to Liefering.

While unpopular in Austria's 'Erste Liga', Liefering's presence in senior competition provides Salzburg's fringe players with valuable opportunities in a first-team environment from a young age.

Since 2012, they have been Salzburg's reserve side and as a result, cannot be promoted to the top tier of Austrian football.

However, the organic first-team exposure has helped develop Salzburg's youngsters.

So much so, that in 2017, Salzburg's U19s lifted the prized UEFA Youth League title (a Champions League equivalent for youth sides) with a squad made up of several Liefering players.

The alignment between Salzburg and reserve club Liefering is very close to the approach at Leeds United.

U23 players are integrated within the first-team group for training at Thorp Arch, and can quite conceivably appear for the U23s on a Friday evening, before being named in a senior matchday squad on Saturday or Sunday.

This is similar to how Salzburg U19 players represent their parent club in the UEFA Youth League, and Liefering in domestic competition - all under the Red Bull umbrella.

Within this model, when a player is deemed to have advanced beyond the stage of the Erste Liga, they are promoted to the senior Red Bull Salzburg side.

During Marsch's time as head coach in Austria, a key example of promotion from within is the case of Karim Adeyemi who this season, at 20 years old, has scored three goals in seven Champions League appearances.

He joined the Red Bull club at age 16, from spVgg Unterhaching in Germany's lower leagues, a former Bayern Munich cast-off, and was initially sent on loan to Liefering. Upon his 17th birthday, Adeyemi was promoted to the senior team and has gradually learned his craft waiting in the wings behind current Leicester City striker Patson Daka.

Due to Salzburg's youth transfer policy, Marsch is no stranger to working with players aged 21-and-under. In fact, many of his starting XIs in Austria were populated by players within that age range.

It will be interesting to see whether Marsch attributes wholesale change to the U23 setup at Leeds, based on his previous experience, or whether he will even have a say in such matters.

Victor Orta's reasonably successful U23 recruitment drive since arriving as Director of Football is expected to continue this summer, provided he remains at the club.

Either way, Marsch has the requisite experience to understand the integrated approach currently in operation at Thorp Arch with regards to the U23s.

How he chooses to implement the young players currently milling around the first-team conversation will be of particular intrigue.
